<i>When I first published that 1974 paper, I failed to realize just how controversial it would be to suggest that infants who disappeared had been deliberately killed by incoming males as part of a reproductive strategy. I was not nearly as careful as I should have been in differentiating between infants who disappeared under suspicious circumstances, those where attacks were witnessed, and those whose deaths were confirmed. Later on, it became common practice to do this. <i>We didn't have any electronic way to record data. You have a white board - a PVC slide - and a soft pencil and you can write on that and clean the plate after transferring the data to a (analogue) notebook. To make quantitative recordings, you draw a table on the plate before diving, with the behaviours you expect to observe. When you do these observations, you should not put your eyes away from the fish that you are observing, because you lose them very easily. José Maria Vilhena worked as a security guard at INPA’s Ecology building. One day I was at the building entrance waiting for a rain to subside for me to leave, and he came to me. He told me that he knew that I researched ants and that he was very curious to learn about it, he wanted to learn new things, about scientific research, ecology, ants, etc., but as a security guard he knew that it would not happen. I talked to Heraldo about it, and Heraldo gave Vilhena the opportunity to work as a technician in the lab. Vilhena identified with the work, took training courses and even entered the University, where he studied Geography. <i>We borrowed a couple of cuckoo eggs from the museum here and made a mould around each of them using Silastic rubber. The mould was in two halves, into which we poured resin and then stuck the two halves together. These resin egg models were then exactly the same dimensions as a real cuckoo egg, and the same mass too.We then painted them using acrylic paints to match the variety of eggs which cuckoos lay. Different cuckoo races lay different eggs. One race, for example, lays a pure blue egg and goes for redstarts.The reed warbler race of cuckoo lays a greenish spotted egg, which looks just like areed warbler egg. And there’s a meadow pipit strain of cuckoos, which lay brownish spotted eggs. He was curious, in particular, because I had talked about our thinking on the origins of these species pairs and whether they had resulted from a double invasion process, or whether they had evolved in sympatry. <i>We aimed at arriving at islands at 8am and the first job was to take spectrophotometric light measurements. It was important to take these measurements at the same time at all islands. I also wanted clear skies, to have similar sunlight conditions at each island. I had built a large wooden box with polysterol filling and a bright red plastic foil around it to hold my laptop and the spectrometer. I had a 10m long optical fibre cable. This was usually lying on the floor of the boat.
